About PlatAfrica

Est 1999

Annually, Anglo American Platinum, Platinum Guild International (PGI) India and Metal Concentrators host the PlatAfrica jewellery design and manufacture competition. The competition celebrates and supports the South African platinum industry by giving student, apprentice and professional jewellers the opportunity to work, experiment, innovate and develop their technical expertise with the metal. PlatAfrica highlights the strength and beauty of platinum, while revealing the glowing jeweller talent of South Africa.

“Anglo American Platinum is proud to support this tremendous competition since its inception. Our partnership with AFI is one example of the work we’ve been doing with our local industry and global partners to explore new and innovative ways to facilitate access to new markets and grow sustainable demand for South African produced jewellery and design. We believe there is a significant opportunity to develop and grow the local platinum jewellery industry, thereby contributing to job creation and economic growth.”

Natascha Viljoen, CEO, Anglo American Platinum, speaking at the PlatAfrica 2020 awards ceremony

The PlatAfrica Pop Up!

Every year an original theme is chosen for the competition, producing one-of-a-kind, statement pieces of jewellery. Every year many of those pieces are melted down in order to reuse the precious platinum. Our PlatAfrica Pop Up store — exclusively online — provides the public an opportunity to invest in the precious resource of platinum, and in the South African jewellery industry.

2020’s theme was Designed for Men of Platinum; a unique focus set to tap into a novel, exciting men’s market.

Provenance

Rest assured the platinum used in every piece has been responsibly sourced in accordance with the Responsible Jewellery Council Code of Practice and Chain of Custody Requirements.
